    Who is Learning Italian in America?

Guest speakers included Dennis Looney of the Modern Language Association, David Ward of Wellesley College, and Lucia Pasqualini from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Rome.

The workshop is organized by the Italian American Committee on Education (IACE) and it is part of a series of fun and interactive outside-the-classroom educational events (‘Mangia Sano e Parla Italiano’) for American students of Italian aimed to expose learners to the full flavor and richness of Italian language and culture.

    Life is full of beautiful surprises. I have been following Jhumpa Lahiri for years, having discovered her books when I lived in New York. A friend of mine gave me Interpreter of the Maladies as a present. Nevertheless I hadn’t known about her deep passion for the Italian language nor that she had spent three years in Italy learning Italian. The result of her stay in Rome was a book written in that language, In altre parole, a sincere ode to the Italian language, which makes Lahiri an extraordinary ambassador of Italian abroad.

    AP Party at the Consulate. Italian is Getting Cooler

    IACE annual assembly and award ceremony for the teachers who have brought the largest number of students to sustain the Italian AP exam. The goal was reached one year ahead of schedule: the number of American high school students enrolled in the Italian AP (Advanced Placement) exam this coming Spring has already surpassed 2,500, the minimum that had to be reached by 2016 to keep the test alive. And 60% out of the 2.993 students who signed up to take the exam come from the states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, where IACE operates.

    As someone who has been teaching a foreign langauge (Italian) since 1972, I am delighted to see the NYC school system will add or expand 40 dual-language programs: Spanish, Japanese, Hebrew, Chinese, French and Haitian-Creole. I am also intrigued, however, that of the six “official” languages of the city of New York, according to the 2008 mayoral edict (Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Italian, and French Creole), Italian is not one of the language programs, whereas two non-“official” languages are, Hebrew and Japanese. In 2011, Gov. Cuomo ordered a similar mandate that included Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Russian, French, and French Creole.

It’s surprising – but not surprising to us at i-Italy – that many Americans, who do not have a familial relationship with our country, are interested in studying our language. The charm of our culture penetrates America, regardless of the blood ties of its inhabitants.
