    Italian Jazz "Play the sax, Pal"

    If we were to ask someone who knew even just a little bit of jazz what instrument he most associated the genre with, which instrument made jazz stand out from other musical genres, he or she would almost inevitably say the saxophone or trumpet. Wind instruments. Extensions of the voice, practically, extensions of the most direct, human form of communication. Breath externalizes our soul, gives us our identity, sets us apart. It begs the question: why is jazz generally associated with the emission of air from our lungs?

    After a successful run at the celebrated Piccolo Teatro in Milano and a tour throughout northern and southern Italy, the show Taddrarite, brought by Accura Teatro, has had its North American debut (during the In Scena! Italian Theater Festival). Winner of the Roma Fringe Festival 2014, one of the largest multi-arts festivals, the play, written and directed by Luana Rondinelli, is the story of three women, victims of violence, told with irony, intelligence, theatrical skill and superb acting.

    Two months of intense organizational efforts from i-Italy between Naples and New York, a great collaboration with the Consulate General and the other institutions of Sistema Italia, enthusiastic and generous support from all sectors of the community. These ingredients made for the success of the mayor of Naples Luigi De Magistris’ trip to New York. Street encounters in the Little Italies of Manhattan and the Bronx, conferences in the two major university institutes, meetings with entrepreneurs and tourism agencies – and a great human connection with mayor Bill de Blasio. At the center of it all, an atypical and unexpected Naples, the emblem of an inclusive city, which volunteers alongside New York to jumpstart an international movement towards the globalization of the rights to citizenship – a globalization of humans, not just of capital and merchandize.

    Family-owned Italian coffee company Lavazza just turned 120. The event was celebrated with a gala held on May 14th in Manhattan’s hip Meatpacking district. Present were members of the Lavazza family including Giuseppe and Francesca Lavazza, great-grandchildren of company founder Luigi. We spoke with them as well as with Chief Executive Officer of Lavazza USA, Ennio Ranaboldo, as they told us about the great pride they all feel in the progress and the results that Lavazza has obtained and continues to strive for, maintaining the spirit of creativity that it was initially conceived in.

Much space is dedicated to the young and creative. “Made in Italy” offers elegance and originality. We specifically focused on “Collective Focus: Italy”, which ends on Sunday May 17th. The exhibition, curated by the editor of W magazine Stefano Tonchi, took place at the futuristic Skylight Clarkson. You’re still in time to experience the breathe in the fresh air of Italian and international design.
