I-Italy’s “Grandparents and Grandchildren in Italian America” project documents the Italian presence in the United States by way of a series of conversations between grandparents and grandchildren. We have only just begun this new adventure with our first TV and Web series made in collaboration with ANFE and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Tuesday, January 12, 2016, was the occasion for a unique and singular presentation ceremony, as Dr. Robert C. Gallo, Director of the Institute of Human Virology and Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, received the coveted Leonardo da Vinci Award for 2015 from the now 40-year-old Italian Heritage and Culture Committee-NY, Inc. (IHCC-NY, Inc.) The event took place at the Consulate General of Italy in New York City, in cooperation with the Office of the Consul General, under the auspices of Minister Natalia Quintavalle.

Giura continues to work on her memoir, publishing extracts throughout the literary community while Marra has published more than 200 poems online and in print, has published two poetry collections, two chapbooks and short stories in collections by Three Rooms Press and others.

In many ways exemplary of the first-generation success story, Sinatra is also a paradoxical figure for Italian Americans. He both confirmed and challenged the common stereotypes of Italian-Americans. He—along with others such as Fiorello LaGuardia and Jo DiMaggio—changed how Americans viewed Italians, permitting earlier Americans to see that Italian Americans could indeed become assimilated. On the other hand, his sometimes boorish behavior at the bar or casino reinforced some of the worst stereotypes.
