Manhattan. After many years of restoration it seems that finally Washington
Square Park is completely re-opened. There are still fences to be
rolled away but finally the East side of the park seems to have
returned to its original splendor with new benches, beautiful plants
and flowers and a newly polished General Garibaldi statue (by Giovanni
Turini, 1888).
The statue, one of the most beloved and visible signs on italianità in New York, was removed from the park for cleaning and restoration. The pedestal was then moved a few yards from its original spot in order to provide full unobstructed view along the axis of the park. A new performance stage has also been added and will make it easier to host concerts, plays and readings.
